I trust that you all had a wonderful Christmas with friends & family and that you are looking forward to 2012…

We certainly had a busy time here with 24 people for up to 3 days staying & enjoying each others company. Lots of dishes & laughter for everyone.

Already I have been interstate & am home again for only 2 days before heading off for our annual holiday at the beach with my family.

Constantine Quilts will be closed from today until January 26th when we return home. All orders will be processed in the order they are received upon our return.

I’m also thrilled to let you know that all my overseas customers can now purchase my rulers from the lovely Lyn at www.quiltedmemoriesllc.com in Kansas City, USA. She has just received her first shipment of rulers/templates and has quickly got them on her website. So go & say hi to Lyn! I can’t wait to meet her in person when I’m there in May this year teaching classes at www.mqsshow.org

Happy Christmas to all!!

It has been a mad couple of months here at Constantine Quilts. It is harvest time in South Australia & we are still hoping to be finished before Christmas. This year we are hosting Christmas & are expecting around 24 for lunch & dinner on Christmas day with many staying on as well. Will be lovely to have everyone together at the farm again…

I have been very busy with plans for the Australian Machine Quilting Festival being held next year at the Adelaide Convention Centre. Only yesterday we opened registrations to the Ricky Tims full day seminar. Visit the website for all the details & to register to get your ticket! In the very near future we will also be able to share the names of all our wonderful teachers for next year along with their class offerings. Plenty for all genres of quilters – domestic, longarm & computerised (Intelliquilter, Statler, Compuquilter & Qbot)

Constantine Quilts will be closed from 8th January until the 24th January whilst we take a break at the beach with the kids on our annual holiday. I’ll still have email access, but will be unable to fill orders until I return home. All orders will be sent in order of receipt upon my return.

With that in mind – to celebrate the end of an amazing year – we will have a sale as my gift for Christmas, of 10% off everything at Constantine Quilts. This sale will finish on December 30th at midnight. The discount will be deducted from your total order prior to charging your card or emailing your invoice for internet banking.

My garden is coming along nicely! Nothing has died yet…

Baby Ellie is HOME as of Friday. About 5 weeks earlier than we thought she might be. She is a healthy & strong little girl & is now over 2kg. Mum & dad are suitably proud & exhausted & excited all at the same time.

My customers are absolutely the BEST. Due to a query on a new to me product, I have found where to get the following & I’m really excited about it! I have tried it out & it is fantastic for effectively using up all those batting scraps. Everything costs us so much here in Australia, so anyway we can better utilise our leftovers is a good thing.

Heat Press Batting Together

Quilters! We don't have to sew the batting edges together anymore... we can fuse it.

HEAT Press Batting Together is happy to introduce our new product to you. HEAT Press Batting Together was developed to fuse batting-fabric together to fit a specific size, to enlarge or reinforce. The HEAT Press Batting Together is 1 ½ inch cloth tape on a 10 yard roll, will allow batting edges to be fused together with a soft fuse that stretches, eliminating the old pinning and stitching of extra batting pieces needed to fit a specific project. The product can be used on any batting fabric content.

Directions for using HEAT Presss Batting Together:

Iron Settings are Most Important when applying tape. Irons with Teflon plates can use low cotton to fuse tape. Irons without a teflon plate use the new instructions below.
Test your iron with tape and batting.

* 100% polyester batting... low setting.. (high synthetic) and use and up and down motion until the glue is set. You can use a low shot of steam to finish the fusible process holding the iron above the tape.

* Test all synthetic mixed battings ~ usually a wool setting works well.

You may find that the batting looks flat after application but when it cools the batting is fluffy again.

With a large quilt batting 93" and adding more width, I use weights on either side of the batting to hold it in place.

Use and up and down motion with the iron as you place the tape for the first time on the batting edges.
When the tape is set in place then apply heat and you may use a little light steam to completely melt the glue backing.
You will find that the tape is soft, flexible, stretches and is easy needle ready for either hand quilting or machine quilting.

"As a long arm quilter for the past five years, I had a stack of batting pieces, some were large but odd measurements. I found the same, working with charitable groups as the 'Quilts for Veterans'. They also accumulated many large pieces of left over batting. This product works to fuse these batting pieces easily without sewing with the sewing machines.

It’s Spring!

Yes it is springtime & I’ve actually been in my garden….this is not a common thing for me, so most are quite shocked at this revelation vbg. My time is scarce & the garden has never been a priority to me with quilting always beckoning me. BUT this year I am hosting christmas for the first time in about 5 years. There will be LOTS of family here & I would love to have a bit nicer garden for them to enjoy together. So it is has been an interesting process so far with much more to do yet!

I am also thrilled to have a reason to make a girly quilt in the very near future! My newest SIL has given birth to a very tiny (2lb 15oz) little girl. The first ‘Browning’ girl since my youngest – Sarah! Mine has just turned 13 last week, so about time we had another little girl in the family. Great excuse to actually make another quilt for sure. Little Ellie was 10 weeks early but mum & bubs are doing great so far. Will be a little while before she is home, but we are all looking forward to christmas with her as well. All her boy cousins can spoil her rotten!

Sharon Schamber is amazing!

Hi everyone,

I’m nearly back organised again after hosting the amazing Sharon Schamber for 4 days! We had near to capacity for the two days of longarm classes with no spaces left for 2 days of domestic machine classes. What a huge learning curve for the 8 participants that committed for the whole 4 days!

Here are some photos taken by Michele over the 4 days to show what everyone enjoyed & others missed out on! If you ever get the chance in the future then don’t hesitate.

It was Gene’s birthday on the Tuesday, so we took both Gene & Sharon out to dinner! This was Michele’s yummy desert - who could resist??

Then of course we had 3 suitcases full of stunning quilts shown to us with a funny, inspirational & entertaining evening with Gene & Sharon working as a team to explain the stories behind her quilts. We got to see & touch all of these quilts, we are so blessed! Last years Houston Best of Show along with many other major award winning quilts were included.

There are so many more… you just had to be there!

There is a fantastic new fine needle threader now available from the Sewline company.

You simply insert the fine needle (sizes 9 to 12) in a guide hole and lay the thread across another positioning groove.

Press lightly down on the lever button which directs a shaped pin to pickup and guide the thread through the needle eye.

Simply slide out your threaded needle.

This smart little threader works only with 9-12 size needles.

Being that everything is so fine and therefore fragile, it is important to only use the right size needle and position correctly otherwise the threader mechanism may jam or actually break.

There is a replacement cartridge mechanism available if this inadvertently happens.

Other thoughtful features of the Sewline Threader are a magnet on the base to pickup those fine needles and there is a handy needle storage chamber. An excellent video demonstration on how to use this product can be seen at the following movie.

Well the weather is wild, windy & wet! Our family is about to head off in the morning for a 2 daybreak. The first in a very LONG time together as we missed our annual holiday in January at the beach due to such a late harvest here on the farm. So we will go to Goolwa for 2 nights - might end up in the car or motel room out of the weather, but at least we are away & together vbg.

It is now less than a month before the amazing Sharon Schamber arrives in Australia. Washable School Glue

Helmar Kid's School Glue, easy to use and quick drying. Ideal for use with paper, cardboard, school projects, craft & hobbies, most timbers, particle board, MDF, balsa wood, fabrics, book binding, most art & craft materials, styrene etc. Clean up with water…

Dried glue on material can be removed by washing in warm soapy water. Perfect to use as a basting glue when appliquéing your projects.

Well I am only home for a short time! I’m off again this Thursday to drive to Sydney for Quilt & Craft Expo at Roshill Gardens. This is a trade only event and entry is free. You MUST register before to gain entry, but it is fun to catch up with lots of people and the AMQA Challenge quilts will be hanging & the couple of photos I’ve seen look like there were some amazing entries! Congratulations to all the winners. Great prizes & great publicity in a National Magazine coming your way.

Seeing as I am driving over…. if there is any item that you would especialy like me to bring over to save on postage then please let me know by Tuesday night. I’ll be packing on Wednesday & leaving before daylight on Thursday morning. Especially any Beba’s cutting mats & Renae’s Red Snappers that cost more to post.

Red Snappers are a system to load quilt tops and backs on machine quilting frames.

This rod and clamp system is available to fit 12' ($85) and 14' ($95) quilting frames. The set has rods and clamps designed to fit on three rollers. It eliminates the need for pins, staples, Velcro, zippers or basting. Boy does time fly when we are having fun. We have just completed a 10 day trip to Victoria where we met some wonderful new owners. Off again tomorrow to the other side of Australia to meet even more new owners. Any orders received this next week will be sent next Monday 18th in order of receipt. Once I get home again I only have 2 weeks to get myself organised for my trip to the USA. I’ll be in Salt Lake City teaching two classes at HMQS and then staying for Quilt Market the following week to check out all the ‘new’ items that just might have to find their way home for you to see. My how time flies when you are so busy with life! I do hope everyone had a lovely Christmas & New Year and found some quality time with family & friends. We ended up completely missing out on our annual beach holiday due to a very late harvest. All our crops are now off, however some are quite damaged & not yet sold. Thankfully we HAD some crops to reap unlike others who have lived through floods, fires & cyclones here in Australia. Our hearts go out to everyone that has suffered unbearable losses in recent times. We are truly blessed to be safe & together!

More activity is happening in our family with our eldest daughter being accepted into University to commence a Bachelor of Design – Visual Communications & starts in only one week. We have to move her to the city & set her up in a house this coming week. My baby is all grown up & spreading her wings! It does not seem very long ago that she worked on Constantine Quilts booth interstate at the age of 12. Her younger sister did her first show last year at the age of 11yrs!

Merry Christmas & a safe New Year to all…

What a season! We should be well on our way through harvesting our crops by now, but this year it has been stop/start /stop with rain, storms & more. We have barely started & now all our grain is threatened by the weather, downgrading due to quality & that is IF we can reap it?? My prayers go out to all those in NSW & Vic with way more severe flooding that us!

I am sitting at an airport yet again on my way to some excited customers that are getting their Intelliquilters installed this week. Any orders received whilst I am away will be sent next Tuesday.

We have been very busy in our household editing & preparing the AMQ Festival DVD of photos. All those that were pre-ordered were posted out on Monday this week. There is still time to order one to put under the Christmas tree if you want to! Emma is home & can post them out whilst I am away.

Quite a few customers have asked me to provide some thread as they are unable to find it locally? It has certainly warmed up here finally! Today is 35 deg C and hot north winds that are sure to ripen our crops ready to harvest. It is a very late start for us – 3 weeks later than normal, which means that it will be late finish probably after christmas this year…

Subject to the weather (isn’t that what being a farmer means – no planning until is has rained, has stopped raining & then when the sun shines??) will be when we can get away for our summer holiday break with the kids at the beach. Use these clamps on longarm, midarm, and shortarm machines.
LIGHTWEIGHT: Only 1.3 ounces/pair. They will not pull down on your quilt edge.
WIDE (8 1/2"): Provides even tension across your fabric edge. This reduces side distortion.
THIN: Will not interfere with your extended throat plate or the edge of your machine. No more bumping into the clamps. Quilt right up to the edge of the clamp.
EASY: Snaps on with a pinch of your finger and thumb.
Strap is 72" Long.
NOTE: These clamps are designed to attach onto one layer of fabric. They do not clamp onto batting.
INSTRUCTIONS FOR BEST RESULTS:
This method will provide even tension on all three quilt layers.
1. Baste the top of your quilt along the sides to secure the top and batting to the back of your quilt.
2. Clip the clamps onto the quilt backing.
3. Gently pull the straps to the side. As soon as you feel the slightest pressure on the strap, lay it onto the velcro strip. This will support the side of your quilt without causing distortion. (DO NOT Torture your quilt by stretching it sideways.)
4. Quilt as desired.
5. Advance your quilt.
6. Repeat 1 to 5. Baste as you go after each time you advance the quilt.

Sewline Aqua Eraser

Removing marking lines from fabric sometimes has proven difficult or other "removal marks" are left instead. Not anymore with the Sewline AQUA Eraser which has been specifically developed for the Sewline Ceramic Leads but may well work with several other markers too. It works rather like a fountain pen with a reservoir you simply fill with water or a water and detergent mix, some of which is packaged with the Eraser.
Your finger pressure on the soft grip then dampens the special soft fibre point. By lightly dabbing or running this point along the line or mark, the special point absorbs the pencil or water-based ink mark. So much quicker and easier than fiddling with a sponge or cloth. When the point of the Aqua Eraser becomes discoloured, simply pull it out and slip in a new point. Sewline Aqua Eraser Refills Available.

Bohin Mechanical Chalk Pencil

Not your Grandmother's chalk pencil, this chalk pencil is a favourite of many.

This quilt marking tool is a mechanical pencil with compressed ceramic chalk for "lead". It never needs sharpening. The extra fine "lead" (0.9mm) leaves a nice line. The chalk can be washed out or erased with the fabric eraser. And yes, the eraser on the pencil works!

Bohin makes four colors (white, gray, yellow, green) of these "leads" that swap in and out of the same chalk pencil. Nifty! Other colours coming soon...

Use a light box to transfer designs to your quilt top.

I’ve been hacked!

It has been a busy week starting with going on Year 6 school camp with my youngest DD. She turned 12 on the first day so we had a lovely class birthday party with chocolate cake & candles of course!

The next day we walked off the calories by climbing Mount Remarkable in the mid north of South Australia. The southern end of the Flinders Ranges.

I then got home to discover this morning that the infamous Turkish Hacker who has been wasting people’s time since 2006, had hacked into a number of websites overnight! Many more grey hairs later, lots of assistance from our host server & lots of wasted time we are now back online. My apologies if you have been trying to to view the site!

I especially want to mention Christine Abela from www.geckogully.com who originally set up www.constantinequilts.com She has done an amazing job of getting it back online so quickly today! Thank you Christine - it was amazing service at a stressful time. That left me free to work on my other websites to get them free of the hacker.

Salem Cutting Mats -

The fine quality of Salem Cutting Mats is the result of years of testing. It is superior to others in many ways. It will withstand the hot sun or cold winters. Never warping or cracking after exposure to severe temperature change, these cutting mats can be rolled up for easy storage, put in the trunk of your car, and under normal room temperature, the "memory" will allow the mat to relax and return to its original flat state. This versatile translucent mat is tough enough to cut on, yet soft enough to pin into and extends the life your rotary cutting blades.

You can pin patterns and fabrics to the cutting mat to prevent slippage or crawling as you cut. My goodness it is June already! In 2 days I will be driving to Sydney to attend the Quilt & Craft Expo at Rosehill Racecourse…

Any last minute orders can be packed tomorrow to be delivered postage free at this show! Especially the amazing Salem cutting mats that are difficult & expensive to post!

There will be a great display of quilts at this show from AMQA members for shop owners/teachers/distributors to see all the different types of quilting available today from our machine quilters.

We will also have lots of information on AMQ Festival right next to the A1/Intelliquilter booth! Come along to collect your entry forms to enter all your amazing quilts into the quilt show. It certainly has been a very busy time this past month! We have had more A1 machines arrive – some have gone to lucky new owners & some are still available for immediate delivery.

It has been the ‘show’ season in the USA with numerous major shows & prizes being given over the last 5 weeks. We are thrilled that we received a 2nd place at HMQS this year with a joint quilt designed & made by my sister, Helen Stubbings & quilted by me! Belle of the Ball was a large quilt…here is a snippet of it.

Congratulations to all the Aussies that achieved both acceptance into these shows and to any & all ribbons!

There is also an amazing NEW 31” A1 Quilting machine called the “Horizon” that was released at Paducah, KY this year! I intend having this new, easy to move, longarm machine that is very much suited to both freehand & computerised quilting with the Intelliquilter, available to test drive at the Australian Machine Quilting Festival in October.

One item you may want to consider me bringing over due to being unable to post them easily are the amazing Salem Cutting mats!

Salem Cutting Mats

You can pin patterns and fabrics to the cutting mat to prevent slippage or crawling as you cut. The red 1" grid lines extend an inch beyond the numbers for reference points when fabric is covering the centre portion of the board. For tracing or designing patterns, place the cutting mat on top of a light table...its wonderful!

Mats are 1/8" thick and although not completely transparent, will allow light to pass through.

Care instructions:

1. It is important to always cut with a sharp blade.

2. Use only quality rotary cutting blades. No not use art knives or Exacto type blades.

3. Be sure when cutting the rotary cutter is perfectly vertical to the fabric. Do not cut at an angle. This could cause the blade to mar into the mat.

4. Use a brown paper bag and lightly rub to clean any lint deposits.

We are off to our picnic in the scrub yet again this year….lots of people, families, kids, dogs & DUST!! We all meet in a scrub on Yorke Peninsula and have a huge BBQ, salads & desserts. Hope everyone is keeping cool in all this HOT weather??? We have a heat wave here for the next week, but we have to keep working…

A huge thanks to all I spent time with in Western Australia last week. Boy oh boy did the holidays go FAST!!

We spent a lovely 2 weeks at the beach down in Robe, SA overlooking the bay of wonderful blue water & clear skies for most of the time. Weather was very mild with enough warm days for kids to swim & surf. We avoided an awful heat wave up here thankfully !!

Time for home and back to work with a vengeance. Yesterday we unloaded a huge shipment of new items. I’ve spent most of today unpacking and getting them on the website.

The first announcement is that Constantine Quilts are now bringing in the wonderful

Salem Cutting Mats

You can pin patterns and fabrics to the cutting mat to prevent slippage or crawling as you cut. The red 1" grid lines extend an inch beyond the numbers for reference points when fabric is covering the centre portion of the board. For tracing or designing patterns, place the cutting mat on top of a light table...its wonderful!

Mats are 1/8" thick and although not completely transparent, will allow light to pass through.

Care instructions:

1. It is important to always cut with a sharp blade.

2. Use only quality rotary cutting blades. No not use art knives or Exacto type blades.

3. Be sure when cutting the rotary cutter is perfectly vertical to the fabric. Do not cut at an angle. This could cause the blade to mar into the mat.

4. Use a brown paper bag and lightly rub to clean any lint deposits.

Constantine Quilts will be closed from 23rd December until 29th December. All orders received during this time will be processed on our return from our family Christmas at the river with a ski boat, lots of kids, extended family & mega amounts of food and laughter. to all for the good wishes on my recent ribbon at the Quilter’s Guild of SA show for Excellence in Longarm Machine Quilting. Here is a photo of the winning quilt which will finally be given to my mum for her birthday that was in October!

It is amazing what you can do with an old tablecloth…. it is titled

‘Old is New Again’ and has been quilted with a combination of Intelliquilter & freehand. The radiating lines were all marked using Renae’s Mini Rays and then stitched using one of my rulers.

If you notice in the photo that there are a couple of lines missing then don’t panic LOL!! I took this photo before it went in the show & then saw where I’d missed them. It was then stitched correctly. This photo was when it was being blocked and I never got around to taking another once it was completed.

Not long now until I leave to drive to Melbourne!

Constantine Quilts now has a large variety of battings available for purchase by the linear length. Did you know the following about battings?? (Kindly provided by Hobbs Bonded Fibres)

General Information... Batting

In general, batting is made using various processes. The process by which battings are manufactured and produced gives a product its identity. There are (5) primary processes by which battings are made:

Garnetted or Plain: Garnetted batting is processed through garnett or carding equipment and layered with no other added processes. This plain batting is not bound together in any manner and is very easy to quilt. The major issue with this type of batting is potential for migration and shifting. This type of batting will tend to bunch and shift between the quilt lines if not quilted as close as ¼” –1/2” spacing

Needle punched: This type of batting is carded or garnetted then layer to form a web. The web is then passed through needling equipment that mechanically entangles the web by using thousands of needles that lock the fibre together. This type of product works to give strength to a product while allowing for a soft hand and thinner profile vs. a high loft type product. Needle punched wool or polyester tend to migrate, but will not bunch or shift like plain garnetted or carded products. Needle punched products can be thermal bonded or resin bonded.

Thermal bonded, Heat sealed, Glazine finish: All of these types of batting are similar in that they typically use some type of low melt binder fibre in the mix. Low melt binder fibre is a polyester fibre that is designed to melt at a lower temperature than a standard polyester fibre. Thermal bonded products have low melt fibre blended with standard polyester. The blended web is passed through an oven and the low melt fibres “flow” and bonds to the surrounding polyester fibres. Problems with Thermal bonded products are that the surface fibres are not tied down which allows for migration. In addition, thermal bonded products do not dry clean and break down faster with washing than do resin bonded products.

In the case of glazine or heat sealed type products, a web is passed through a mechanical process that applies heat to the surface of the web. The surface of the web is “sealed” or “glazed”. This sealing or tying of the fibres on the top and bottom helps minimize the potential for bearding, bunching and shifting allowing for the batt to open like a blanket and have good stability.

Resin bonded: Resin bonded batting is made made from a wide variety of fibres including polyester, cotton, wool etc.. A web is garnetted or carded then passed through a process that applies a resin to both sides. The web is dried and cured to form a bonded batting. This bonded batting resists bearding better than any other type of batting. There are many different types of fibre and resin combinations to give a desired “look” and “hand”. Combining processes, fibres and resins makes the resin bonded process the most versatile and most effective way to produce battings.

What an amazing trip to New Zealand! The whole family came with me and we were hosted by the amazing John Nielsen in beautiful Baylys Beach in the North of the North Island….

Had a great time in our class and great fun installing & playing with even MORE new features just released on the Intelliquilter for everyone. It’s so hard to keep up with all the improvements when they come out so often for us. What a great team Zoltan Kasa had to keep delivering our wish lists!

Well I really need to share some photos of our amazing weekend held in Agery with the most delightful Sharon Schamber and her husband Gene….

These photos are of my A1 table being transported to our local hall in preparation for our huge weekend with Sharon. Can you imagine how anxious I was???

I had to put this last one in LOL! This my 13 yr son who came to the rescue when the batteries died in the wireless headset….the power pack is now duck taped to Sharon’s arm!!

1. Fancy Feather Fiasco - Friday 10th July

A full day drawing and stitching heirloom style feathers in borders, sashings, blocks in unending variations! Participants will be required to bring pencils/pens for drawing and one of those $2- large drawing pads. Other notes provided. (Later at night you will start dreaming feathers!)

2. Tempting Templates - Saturday 11th July

Time to dust of those templates and learn easy, efficient ways to use your templates to create original designs on customer's quilts. Participants will be required to bring pencils or pens for drawing. Extensive class notes will be provided.

3. Use your IQ to your best advantage! (Offered Tentatively) - Sunday 12th July

This is (mainly) for the people with an IQ Computer system, and will start off question-based, then going over the latest upgrades, like no-sew zones, echo-quilting, - as well as introducing "Pre-Design Studio" - a stand-alone drawing software, which can also be used to make dxf files for IQ, or to make paper-patterns for block and pantographs designs.

Next I need to let you know that I am visiting the beautiful country of New Zealand in July. I will be on the North Island visiting John Nielsen, to install an Intelliquilter on his A1 Quilting machine and providing 2-3 days of workshops in his studio to quilters. John lives in Baylys Beach north of Auckland.

Each workshop runs over a day, hence you can pick one, or decide to take all. (Info & help with accommodation bookings will come later)

Don’t forget……Investment Allowance: small business and general business tax break

The Government has announced an investment tax break for business.

The tax break, in the form of an investment allowance will provide:

Sharon Schamber is visiting Australia in May 2009 and will be teaching some classes. The classes for Sharon have been filled very quickly, but I am taking names for the waiting list if anyone needs to drop out! Our summer - beach holiday is over & we arrived home to a record breaking heatwave, kids back to school and then the horror & devastation of the Victorian bushfires. Fires are still burning and the weather conditions are worsening again for this weekend, so please keep your prayers & donations coming.

Constantine Quilts wishes to extend our sympathies our prayers and our support to all those affected by this tragedy. Quilts are on their way to victims from my collection to hopefully show how much Australians care and want to help those victims feel loved and not alone in all this. I can barely imagine what it would even be like to lose absolutely everything - even when I was in the middle of the Ash Wednesday fires years ago & terrified then!

I have also been busy searching for & purchasing some new items for the shop the past few weeks! So now is the time to let you all know what is new....

Merry Christmas & Happy New Year!

Wow!! Where has the time gone???? This time of year is so busy and frantic that I've hardly had time to breath & enjoy it.....harvest was completed just before the big rain to fill our tanks in time for Christmas, but I do feel for those that had not yet finished as this rain was not advantageous to them at all! We ended up with reasonable yields, not so good quality and typically dropping grain prices ....but that is farming!

I'm very proud of all my kids achievements this year with one of the three getting DUX of their year level & the other two coming VERY close. We have high expectations as their past performances have always been of a high standard, but we are always proud no matter what!

My next GOOD NEWS is that I have finally been successful in ordering more of the Featherlight Clamps! They are flying their way here right now. The bad news is that the price has had to change to $40- each due to the current global economy/exchange rates.
